Lost cities in Australia - 1

Some photographs of rock formations in Australia that resemble an old decaying civilisation swallowed by the wilderness.

1 - Kings Canyon, NT, Australia

Did the Kings Canyon Rim Walk in 2015 July.

Pictures and trip report are in my blog: http://mntviews.blogspot.com/2015/07/kings-canyon-nt-australia.html

1.1)  Plenty of scenes like this in Kings Canyon ... They look just like a lost city.

1.3)  Continuation to the right of previous pic ~~~
The foot bridge you can see here is the same as the one on the right edge of previous pic.

1.5)  How the domes are formed: (To enlarge the image, click on it.)

The above beehive-like domes make the plateau in Kings Canyon look like a "lost city". They are the result of erosion of vertical cracks in the sandstone.

Aerial photos of the plateau show a grid-like pattern of parallel cracks. One set runs nearly east-west and the other runs approximately north-south.

- 1:  The domes on top of the range started as cube shaped blocks bounded by intersecting cracks.
- 2:  Wind and rain have gradually worn away the sides and top corners in the last 20 million years.
- 3:  The blocks have become domes. separated by flat rock.

2 - Mt Touwouwan, Wollemi Nat Pk, NSW, Australia

Climbed Mt Touwouwan in 2016 February.

Pictures and trip report are in my blog: http://mntviews.blogspot.com/2016/02/mt-touwouwan-wollemi-nat-pk-nsw.html

2.1)  These rock formations are called pagodas

3 - Mt Towinhingy, Wollemi Nat Pk, NSW, Australia

3.1)  Pagoda-like rock formations on the north-western side of Mt Towinhingy

3.2)  The northern slope of Mt Towinhingy is full of pagodas.
- Upper pic:  Here is part of the slope on the north-western side.
- Middle pic: Zooming into the left side of the upper pic
- Lower pic: Zooming into the right side of the upper pic

4 - Citadel Spur, Mugii Murum-ban SCA, NSW, Australia

Mugii Murum-ban SCA is Mugii Murum-ban State Conservation Area.

Climbed and walked along Citadel Spur in 2018 September.

Trip report will be written up one day ... Watch this space  :-)

4.1)  Once you have seen this picture of the Citadel Spur, you should have a burning urge to want to climb and walk all over it.  If not, I don't know what will get you excited  :-)

5 - Lost City, Newnes State Forest, NSW, Australia

Visited Lost City in 2019 June.

Trip report will be written up one day ... Watch this space  :-)

5.1)  This place is called Lost City for the obvious reason that the rock formations resemble an old decaying civilisation swallowed by the wilderness.

5.2)  Wonderful scene !
