Russells Needle, Nattai Nat Pk, NSW, Australia

This is the second time Alan, Yus, Lisa and I climbed Russells Needle in Nattai National Park, NSW.

The first time was 4 months ago, from north-east.
Photographs and trip report are in :

This time, the same gang climb it from the south.

Since not many people have successfully reached to the summit of Russells Needle, would climbing it twice qualify us as experts on this peak ???  :-)

Pictures - 2020 March

A detailed trip report will be written up one day. For now, enjoy these pictures  :-)

3)  To Russells Needle, the yellow circle ~~~
It is like walking on the edge of a razor blade.

4)  Closer to the summit of Russells Needle ~~~
You can see the burnt trees from a fierce bushfire only a month or so ago.

5)  The final ascent, quite a challenge, not for the faint hearted ~~~
Some photographs from the web show climbers using a rope to climb up here.
Us 4 intrepid climbers don't need any rope  :-)

  1. Did you come in on the road from the Spring Hill area through Jellore SF that ends above the Nattai R / Jellore Ck junction? If so how was the road? It was impassable to my Prado about five years back. Or did you get permission to come in along the road through the Kanangra property?

    1. No and no to both questions.
We went to Russells Needle via Mt Jellore summit.

  2. Just found your Bushwalk Australia entry which answers my questions. We came up from the Nattai not far back from the Needle itself (very steep) and made it a round trip by coming back along the direct road about 2 km then heading down to cross Jellore Ck and up to intersect the road we came in on. Likely I've mentioned this route on BA previously. Pushing the memory (30 years ago), but think it took about nine hours with a Sutherland BWC party of 14.
