a = 0.99999...
10a = 9.99999...
10a = 9 + 0.99999...
10a = 9 + a
9a = 9
a = 1
1 = 0.99999... !!!

Actually, there is no discrepancy. In mathematics, the repeating decimal 0.99999... can be shown to be equal to the number 1. In other words, the symbols 0.99999... and 1 represent the same number.
